Academic Program
Daystar's academic program is based on two diverse teaching methods where our teachers model acceptance and respect for two cultures. The two diverse styles are merged to create a harmonious environment and to provide students with the best of what both offer. The way in which the Chinese National curriculum is taught at Daystar helps children to develop memorization skills, habits of hard work and a true understanding of Chinese culture. Our English Montessori program is mixed with other curricula and encourages students to develop self initiative, independence, cooperation and creativity while they practice planning and social interaction skills. Students spend approximately three hours immersed in each discipline.
Kindergarten is a
three year program nurturing children’s curiosity and love of learning The Kindergarten program is designed to prepare students to
successfully transition into Daystar’s elementary program. Each class
has a maximum of 25 students of mixed ages (3-6yrs) with one native
English teacher, one native Chinese teacher and one assistant. The Kindergarten staff also includes an English language specialist to support children working to acquire English as an additional language.
Elementary school has two, three year programs. In lower elementary, students are mixed ages (6-9 years) in grades 1-3 and in upper elementary students are also mixed ages (9-12 years) in grades 4-6. Each class has up to 30 students with one native English teacher, one native Chinese, one English language specialist teacher and a specialty math and science teacher.
From Kindergarten through sixth grade students spend most of their time in their homeroom classes studying the core subjects of English and Chinese language; reading, writing, speaking and listening, mathematics, science and history. Specialty classes such as art, physical education, technology and music sometimes take place in the homeroom as well as outside of the classroom.
